Hub provide outdoor learning programme for pupils to enjoy

As part of the But First… Pause project, Jonny Elliot and Kirsty Brien have been working hard to provide local kids with opportunities to access outdoor activities. Kirsty updates us on their work in November and December 2020:
At the Hub we were keen to reach as many young people as we could with our Outdoor learning programme and over the course of November and December. And we are delighted that we managed to engage nearly 50 year 5 and 6 pupils from Barnard Castle primary schools.
Our main aim was to provide fun and challenging outdoor activities to encourage, team building, initiative and resilience.
Over the series of sessions, the pupils took part in team and leadership tasks, learning how to safely build and maintain a fire using natural materials, they cooked marshmallows, built different styles of shelters and developed their own (very muddy!) team games.
We were very sad that we haven’t been able to continue this term ( so far) and look forward to meeting up with pupils in Spring for some more outdoor learning. However, in the meantime, we’ve designed some Environmental challenges for the children in our absence, so the classes can still work on projects together, even if they are working from home or from school.
